Fall Activity Guide: Dog-Friendly Things to Do in Niagara

Fall in Niagara Is Better With a Dog

Crunchy leaves, crisp mornings and a tail that won't stop wagging: fall might be the best season to explore Niagara with your dog. The heat of summer is gone, the trails are glowing orange and red, and your pup is ready to sniff every single fallen leaf (yes, every one).

If you're looking for dog-friendly things to do in Niagara this autumn, we've rounded up our favourite trails, pet-friendly patios and fall events in St. Catharines, Thorold, Fonthill and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Grab the leash, pack the poop bags and let's go!

Training Isn't Just for Puppies

Thank you to everyone who joined us for BarktoberFest, our annual fall dog walk at Burgoyne Woods! Every step, puppuccino and raffle ticket helped the animals at HSGN. Missed it this year? Mark your calendar for next fall, and follow us on socials to be the first to hear the date. Missed the event or want to give a little more? Our CanadaHelps page is open for donations all October long, so there's still time to make a difference for the animals in our care.

Dog-Friendly Trails and Walks in Niagara

October is peak season for Niagara's trails, and plenty of them welcome four-legged hikers.

Burgoyne Woods (St. Catharines)

A local favourite with wooded paths and a fenced, double-gated off-leash dog park with separate big- and small-dog areas. Perfect for a quick zoomie session.

Merritt Trail (St. Catharines)

Follow the historic Welland Canal route along Twelve Mile Creek for a longer walk without leaving the city.

Short Hills Provincial Park (Thorold)

Niagara's only provincial park is a fall showstopper, with rolling hills and seasonal waterfalls like Swayze Falls. Leashed dogs are welcome, but there are no washrooms, so plan ahead. Nearby DeCew Falls and Morningstar Mill make a picture-perfect add-on.

Steve Bauer Trail (Fonthill)

This flat rail trail through Pelham is ideal for senior dogs, puppies and anyone who prefers a stroll over a scramble.

Niagara River Recreation Trail (Niagara-on-the-Lake)

Start near Queen's Royal Park for paved, wide paths, river views and plenty of fellow dogs to greet.

Pet-Friendly Patios Worth the Walk

After a long walk, everyone deserves a treat. These patios welcome leashed, well-behaved pups:

  • Portside Social Bar & Kitchen (Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines): A sidewalk patio steps from the pier.

  • Decew Brewery (St. Catharines): A laid-back local brewery where your dog can settle in under the table.

  • Kame & Kettle Beer Works (Fonthill): A back patio with water bowls and treats for four-legged guests.

  • Niagara Oast House Brewers (Niagara-on-the-Lake): Fall flavours and a two-storey patio with farm views.

Pro tip: Patio season winds down as the weather cools, so call ahead to confirm hours and pet policies.

Fall Activities With Dogs in Niagara

  • Sip among the vines: Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries like Marynissen Estates Winery welcome leashed dogs on their patios, they even offer tasting flights for your pooch! (Designated driver required, dog not eligible.)

  • Make it a Thanksgiving tradition: Walk off the turkey on October 12, and keep bones, stuffing and pie far from curious snouts!

  • Get spooky: Stage a fall photo shoot in the leaves, or join us for our Howl-O-Ween event! October 29th from 4-8pm at Humane Society of Greater Niagara, 160 Fourth Avenue, St. Catharines, Ontario.

Don't forget to tag @HSGNiagara in your fall adventure photos!

Quick Fall Safety Tips

  • Check for ticks after every trail walk, especially behind ears and between toes.
  • Light up with a reflective collar or clip-on light as days get shorter.
  • Steer clear of mushrooms and mouldy leaf piles, which can upset sensitive tummies.

Make This Fall One to Remember

Niagara is full of dog-friendly adventures this season, but some pups at HSGN are still waiting for someone to share them with. Thinking about adding a hiking buddy to the family? Meet our adoptable dogs, or become a foster and give a shelter dog their first fall walk in a real home.
