Second Chances in the Summer Sun: Inside the Busiest Season at HSGN

Every summer, something remarkable happens inside the walls of the Humane Society of Greater Niagara. The days get longer, the temperatures rise, and so does the number of animals who need us most.

If you've ever visited the shelter in July, you know the energy is different. The hallways are a little busier, the phones ring a little more often, and our team, staff, volunteers, and fosters alike, is working at full stride. Summer is our peak intake season, and while that brings its challenges, it also brings some of our most meaningful moments of the year.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what the summer months really look like at HSGN, and why your support right now makes all the difference.

Why Summer Is Our Busiest Season

It's a pattern we see every year. As the weather warms up across the Niagara Region, our intake numbers climb and calls for service increase. Litters of kittens and puppies born in the spring start arriving at our doors, while wildlife babies begin appearing across our communities. With more people spending time outdoors, our Animal Services Officers also see an increase in calls, from stray and injured animals to leash-law concerns, dog bites, and wildlife-related incidents. Families who've moved, faced financial hardship, or found themselves unable to care for a pet reach out to us for help. Stray animals are found in parks, fields, and neighbourhoods, confused, scared, and in need of care.

This isn't a crisis unique to Niagara. It's a reality for animal shelters across Ontario and beyond. But what makes it manageable here, what makes it meaningful, is the community that rallies around us every single summer.

Since our founding in 1881, Humane Society of Greater Niagara (formerly Lincoln County Humane Society), has been a safe refuge for animals in need. That mission doesn't slow down for summer. It accelerates.

Behind the Scenes: What Our Team Is Really Doing

Walk through our shelter on a July morning and you'll see it all in motion. Our experienced and dedicated staff are feeding, medicating, assessing, and comforting animals at every stage of their journey.

Kittens too young to be adopted are on feeding schedules around the clock. Dogs are being socialized so they learn to trust again. Bunnies who arrived frightened and withdrawn are slowly, patiently coming out of their shells. Every single animal receives individualized care, because every single animal has a story, and we believe every one of those stories deserves a good ending.

Our volunteers are right there alongside our staff, bringing what we like to call their own special energy and compassion to everything they do. Whether they're walking dogs, reading to shy cats, or helping with administrative tasks, our volunteer community is truly the heartbeat of this organization. We couldn't do what we do without them, especially in the summer.

The Foster Connection: A Lifeline When We Need It Most

One of the most important ways our community steps up in the summer is through fostering. When our shelter reaches capacity, which happens faster in July and August than at any other time of year, foster homes become a genuine lifeline for animals who need a safe, quiet space to heal, grow, or simply wait for their forever family.

Foster caregivers provide so much more than a roof over an animal's head. They provide comfort, routine, and love during one of the most uncertain times in that animal's life. They help kittens learn to be kittens. They help dogs rediscover what it feels like to be cared for. They help shy, overlooked animals blossom into the pets their future families have been waiting for.

Think you might be a foster family? Reach out to us today, the animals in our care are counting on people just like you.

Second Chances Are Made Possible By You

There's something special about a summer adoption. Maybe it's the idea of a dog who gets to experience their first real backyard. Or a cat curling up in a sunbeam in a home that's finally, truly theirs. Or a rabbit who came in alone and leaves with a family who adores them.

We often say that every animal deserves a fair chance at life, no matter how big or small, no matter where they came from. This summer, we have animals of all ages, sizes, and personalities waiting for that chance. From playful kittens to calm senior dogs, from bonded pairs to independent spirits, there is likely a perfect match waiting for you at our shelter right now.

Adoption isn't just about finding a pet. It's about changing two lives at once, theirs, and yours.

How You Can Help This Summer

Whether you're ready to adopt, interested in fostering, or looking for another way to give back, there are so many ways to be part of the HSGN community:

  • Adopt — Visit our available animals and open your home to a pet in need.
  • Foster — Provide a temporary safe haven for an animal while they wait for their forever home.
  • Donate — Financial contributions and supply donations help us care for every animal that comes through our doors this summer.
  • Volunteer — Join our incredible team and give your time to animals who need it most.

A Season of Hope

Summer at HSGN is busy. It's demanding. It's emotional. But it is also, without a doubt, one of the most hopeful times of year.

Every animal that arrives through our doors gets access to the care, compassion, and community they need to find their second chance. And every person who chooses to adopt, foster, donate, or volunteer becomes part of a story that is bigger than any one of us.

At HSGN, we've been providing animals with safe refuge and compassionate care since 1881, ensuring every creature gets a fair chance at life, no matter how big or small. This summer is no different.

Thank you for being part of that mission. The animals, and all of us at HSGN, are so grateful you're here.
