Why Fundraising Campaigns Like Fetch a Fortune Are Critical to Saving Animal Lives in Niagara

Every animal who comes through the doors at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara has a story.

Some arrive frightened and unsure, needing a safe place to rest. Some need food, warmth, and medical care after being found lost or abandoned. Others, like Jacob, remind us just how urgent this work can be.

When an animal has experienced neglect, pain, or uncertainty, their road to recovery does not happen overnight. It takes time, veterinary treatment, compassion, daily care, and a community willing to stand behind them.

That is why fundraising campaigns like Fetch a Fortune are so important.

More Than a Raffle: A Lifeline for Animals in Need

At first glance, a 50/50 raffle may look like a fun community campaign with an exciting jackpot. And it is. But for us, Fetch a Fortune is about much more than a prize. It is about creating the resources we need to say “yes” when an animal needs help.

In our most recent fundraiser, our Fetch a Fortune 50/50 raffle awarded $37,830 to the Grand Prize winner, along with two early bird winners claiming $1,000 and $2,000 prizes. In 2025, the campaign also saw incredible community support, with the winner taking home $44,640. These numbers are exciting, but they also tell a deeper story. They show what can happen when people across Niagara come together for a shared purpose: helping animals get the second chances they deserve.

For Humane Society of Greater Niagara, fundraising is not just helpful. It is essential.

Why Fundraising Matters for HSGN

ANonprofit organizations play a major role in filling service gaps and supporting community needs across Canada. For HSGN, the work we do is deeply personal and often urgent. Animals cannot wait for help. When they need medical attention, shelter, food, safety, or intervention, it is imperative that we are ready to support.

That readiness comes at a cost.

Every day, animals in care require food, clean bedding, enrichment, staff support, medication, vaccinations, spay and neuter services, and veterinary treatment. Some animals need emergency care. Some need diagnostics, surgery, or long-term recovery plans. Others need behavioural support, patience, and time before they are ready to find a new home.

These needs do not pause when costs rise. They do not wait for the “right time” in the budget. They are immediate, ongoing, and often unpredictable.

What Your Support Helps Provide

When someone contributes to one of our fundraisers, like Fetch a Fortune, they are not simply entering a draw. They are helping provide a meal to a hungry animal. They are helping cover the cost of medication for a sick pet. They are helping keep kennels clean, cats comfortable, and vulnerable animals safe. They are helping us respond when an animal like Jacob needs care, protection, and a chance to heal.

Jacob’s story is one of many that shows why this work matters. Animals who have experienced hardship often need more than a roof over their heads. They need veterinary attention, proper nutrition, gentle handling, and the security of knowing they are finally safe. They need people who will advocate for them. They need a community that believes their life is worth saving.

Fundraising helps make that possible.

At HSGN, every raffle ticket, donation, and act of generosity helps provide:

  • Food and daily care for animals in the shelter
  • Veterinary treatment and emergency support
  • Safe shelter, enrichment, and comfort
  • Time and resources for animals who need extra care
  • Second chances for animals who deserve a better future

Supporting Daily Care and Long-Term Impact

Fundraising also allows us to plan beyond the immediate moment. While emergency care is a critical part of animal welfare, prevention and long-term support matter too. Funds raised through campaigns like Fetch a Fortune help support the daily operations that keep animals healthy and cared for while they wait for adoption. They also help us to continue offering important services to the Niagara community, including animal care, sheltering, adoption support, veterinary services, and education.

This is especially important at a time when many families and nonprofit organizations are feeling the pressure of rising costs. For animal shelters like us, those pressures can be felt in very real ways. Veterinary care, food, supplies, utilities, facility maintenance, and staffing all impact the ability to provide safe, compassionate care.

At the same time, animals continue to arrive in need of help. Some are surrendered by families facing difficult circumstances. Some are found as strays. Some have been neglected or abandoned. Some simply need a safe place to land.

Behind every kennel door is a life that matters.

Every Ticket Helps Create a Second Chance

That is the heart of Fetch a Fortune.

Yes, the raffle gives one lucky winner a life-changing prize. But it also gives animals something life-changing too: a chance. A chance to be treated. A chance to be fed. A chance to recover. A chance to be loved. A chance to find a family.

Campaigns like this also remind us that helping animals does not have to happen in one single way. Not everyone can adopt. Not everyone can foster. Not everyone can volunteer regularly. But many people can buy a ticket, make a donation, share a campaign, or encourage a friend to get involved. Each action may feel small on its own, but together, they create real impact.

That collective support is what keeps lifesaving work moving forward.
